I had one of those boxy micras, about as reliable as big ben, good on petrol and cheap tax and insurance.... also the only car thats ever been stolen from me, the dumb fuckers tried to run from a police volvo in it,

The police didn't charge them for takeing the car despite video evidence from the patrol car and thier fingerprints everywhere, they did charge me a release fee to get it scrapped though

    Sorry i digress.

Wouldnt personally just get any shitter. Can't put a price on your own safety. You may want a car that's cheap/crap so you don't care about smacking it against a barrier or dinging a door, but i'd want something that's going to hold up in the event of a (serious) accident that might occur for someone new to driving.

    Old Volvo then?

Wouldn't be much good for a new driver though since they are all in bloody high insurance groups, but that's because they're so bloody tough I suppose....  My Dad had an old 740 estate that cost him a few hundred, had all sorts of toys in it too

In terms of safety, avoid the Fiat Cinquecento/Seicento like the plague.  Want to know why?  NCAP results

    lol, internet

£1700 for 10 months is worth it because you can now 'dust' boy racers in 1.2 corsa's???

i think ive heard it all now.

for my 1st year I got about in a 1.1 escort. It was ok, nothing special but that's the way to do it. Just get something that will pass the time til you start building up the no claims. Anything with a 12 month ticket that you can scrap when you're in a better position to insure a decent car. Don't go for anything with electric windows, heated windscreens etc. the more gizno's on it the more there is to go wrong. My second escort was a ghia with all that, the fuze box died on me while it was pissing down on the motorway at night so I had no wipers, lights, windows or heater - not fun.
