In certain countries like Britain for example, are there a lot of gays because homosexuality is accepted therefore they are not afraid to come out?
or is homosexuality accepted because there are a lot of gays?
I ask because, for example, in countries where the ethnic minority population is low, they are a lot less accepted in the society, like blacks in Russia for example, they just live segregated away from the main population. But where the numbers are high they are a lot more accepted in the society, like blacks in France for example, and they mix a lot more with the white population. And there seems to be a lot more racism in the former than in the latter
Because they are less accepted by the society, they are less accepted by the govt too, so therefore their numbers remain low in such countries as Russia, due to strict immigration policy, discrimanitaion etc. So its a bot of a catch 22. I believe that the exposure to people of other origins, be it black, brown or oriental makes people more accepting of them and more understanding of them. Of course there will always be people who are racist no matter what and would prefer to keep away from other ethnicities but that isnt so for most of the population. It allows for ignorance about other ethnicities to be irradicated.
This is from what I got from my observation and by no means am I aware of any studies about it, but after the failure of proposition 8 in Cali a thought accorued to me.
Why are there more gays (or at least seem to be) in some countries and less in others. The obvious answer would be that in some countries they are less accepted therefore they keep it in the closet, but I wondered if it was maybe the other way around, as in, because there are less homosexuals in a country, it is more misunderstood and therefore not as accepted by the society, and then creating another catch 22 of making the closet gays fear coming out.
Any opinions?
