maybe you just think you want him back - rebound sort of thing. if you finished him things obviously cant have been right, so chances are you'd end up finishing it again sooner or later. he's right to stay single a while and very sensible, you should probably do the same for a good few months yet and see how you feel then as you may find you do move on, a month isnt long to get over a long term relationship.
