If we are talking about 'intelligent' life, then I'm not sure there is life out there. If there isn't. then I think there has been at some point, and will be in the future. The lifecycle of living beings is minuscule compared to the lifespan of the universe. So while there probably has been other intelligent beings out there, but the chances are that they have already become extinct.

With the universe being as vast as it is, I'm convinced there will be other intelligent life out there. In this galaxy, doubtful, but with there being in excess of what 100 million galaxies there has to be. If there is I don't think they'll be in the form of what you see in movies, where they have space ships and are coming to kill us all and rape us of our natural resources.

There is definiately intelligent life when you look at the scale of the universe. If we can survive and have dominion of a planet I am sure other life has as well. Just because we haven't seen them or have evidence doesn't mean we are alone. You think I am making the assumption there is life but at least down to statistical probability and the nature of the universe life is always created and destroyed.

It's VERY close minded and silly to actually believe we are the only intelligent like in the universe

I think there will be, or at least has been intelligent life in the universe.  There's millions of galaxies that each contain countless billions of stars and each of these stars will have planets orbiting around them like our Sun.  If humans have been able to survive/evolve then why not else where? I'm sure there are a large number of planets out there that have the right conditions to support life, like our very own Earth.  Scientists have even discovered 'Earth-like' planets orbiting neighbouring stars.

It's hard to believe that there won't be other forms of life out there considering the vast size of the Universe.  I don't think it will be in the form of these little green men with little atennas sticking out of the top of their heads, but I think there has to be another form of life and not just us throughout the entire universe.

Okay, enough of me rambling on; I'm beginning to sound like Stephen Hawking (at least we do share the same forename).

Of course, we can't possibly be the only ones, and we may never develop the equiptment to find out. I think it's silly to assume that there isn't life on other planets though.

Considering the sheer size of the known universe, statistical probability is heavily in favour of life elsewhere existing. Only problem is that the distances involved are so huge that actually making contact is - at least on our part - incredibly fucking hard. Bear in mind that, based on our current understanding of physics, any electromagnetic transmission/possible travel is limited by the speed of light. Which, when considering the distances, means it'd take ridiculously long to get anywhere with either option.

Humans have only been pumping out radio waves and shit since the early 20th century, and even then it's like farting in the wind and hoping somebody the other side of town will hear you.

Even then, maybe whatever's out there is listening for something more advanced and easily picked up and didn't think to check those laughable basic radio waves, maybe they got fed up listening 50 million years ago and thought building some Dyson Spheres might constitute a more fun hobby, maybe they ARE listening and think we're a pathetic excuse for a race and will probably make ourselves extinct before we ever get near to truly esacping the limitations of living on a single planet, letting Nature take it's course in a Prime Directive sort of way.

Also diiiiiiistance. Our nearest neighbours might be 200 light-years away, in which case they still wouldn't have heard jack-shit coming from over here. Bit early in the day for getting our hopes up I feel, we were only shitting in holes in the ground a few hundred years ago, think about what a race might be like now if they'd had even a 200,000 year head start.
