Mario without a doubt.
Even deaf and blind kids that live in caves know who Mario is.
My nan (who has dementia and can't remember how to wipe her arse) can still muster up an "It's-a-me, Mario!"
Bring back Dizzy btw.

Unless they stop making games with them in, theyll always be the most recognisable..when i was a kid it was mario n sonic, even now kids grow up with them so.....give kids a pic of mario theyll know who it is, give them a pic of gordon brown...not a clue

People recognize Mario with just a theme song. Pacman would be close, but Mario was on a home system that everyone owned. Pacman was always more of an arcade-known name (though known at the height of arcades).
Sonic? He was always a second-string Mario speed junkie. Everyone else on that list is too new to be recognized by an older crowd compared to the oldschool characters.
Link would be on the list if his name were in more of the titles, maybe...I still hear a few people thinking he's Zelda every so often. He's also got one of the most recognizable theme songs.
