Things like this remind me why I hate lists. It's all subjective, there's no way any one can be 'the best of all time', it's a stupid endevour. That said making a list based on fame and pop culture makes it that much worse, but nobody would have a clue who half the people were if Rolling Stone had put down Lane, Govan, Vai, Johnson, DiMeola, Holdsworth etc. They have a magazine to sell, people know who Cobain, White and Hendrix and so on are.

In terms of what? Cos he could play the guitar, so he must be good on some level.

In terms of technical ability. As somebody else also stated it would probably be better titled as a list of the most influential guitarists.

But if your telling me that Kurt Cobain is a better guitarist then John Petrucci, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and the like then I really want to hear that argumanet

Cobain, by his own admission, was a mediocre guitarist.

Yeah, cos thats what i said. At some level, he must've been good. He wasn't shit, but he wasn't great but if he could strum a few chords and pluck a few notes then he wasn't shit.

That was the point i was making.

The point I was making is that there is alot of guitarists that don't deserve to be on that list and alot that arent on it that should be. Just because Cobain wrote some good songs doesn't mean hes a good guitarist. I mean Satriani taught Kirk Hammet how to play and he doesnt even make the list.

But then thats Rolling Stone for you

I agree with what you're saying, but no one wants to pick up Rolling Stones magazine, read that poll, then say who?

I was just saying, Cobain was good at some level. I regard a shite guitarist as someone that can't strum a tune.

So what attributes define 'best guitarist'?

    Technical ability, musicianship, creativity.

    i.e. Steve Vai.

I know what you mean and I'm the biggest Vai fan ever, but there's plenty of people who find him too weird, wacky, and aren't into the whole instrumental guitar thing. Sheets of beautiful sound to me, a stream of unintelligable notes to another. Hence why it's so pointless trying to say X is better than Y.
