Who was your preferred choice and why?

I have always been a Maradona fan, I will go into the reasons later but for now I'd like to see who others prefer.

    2-1 Maradona so far.

Unlike the Xavi Lampard threadthough, this is a real competition.

LOL,me and my friend were talkin about this at Uni the other day.

Was wondering when this would come up.

    Personally,I prefer Pele.

    BUT

Maradonna played some of his career in Europe

His performances pretty much helped Argentina win the World Cup

The Brazil team of 1958 probably would have won the World Cup even without Pele, in my opinion.

And 1970, the best national side ever probably.

This is my thinking also, Maradona played in an era of mean defences and in the most defensive league in the world, Serie A, with not much talent around him at napoli, and STILL took them to the title. Pele played all of his career at Santos (with the exception of his stint in MLS) and in a time when football was very attacking.

I will always feel that Maradona was the fan's choice, and Pele is the more "upper-class, respectable" choice.

maradona done himself no favours with his off field problems whilst Pele was the perfect ambassdaor, either.

I can't possibly decide as i am not old enough to have seen either. However, based on compilations and stuff, i'd probably say Maradona was the more exciting to watch, although Pele was the all-round better player (better with both feet, better in the air, better at shooting etc.)

Maradona is without a doubt the best dribbler of a football ever. He's even better the likes of Jimmy Johnstone, Stan Matthews, Johan Cruyff and George Best, which is saying something.

I can only go by what others and told me and what highlights i have seen, which tend to focus on all the good aspects of a player anyway. I mean, i bet i could make Ade Akinbiyi look good on a compilation tape.

Also, i think even if i was able to see games featuring them, there would be so little between them that it would be impossible to decide anyway. It's like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi now. The general consensus would be that both are real quality players.

So i've sat on the fence and gone with 'can't choose'. Sorry. I'll let you sort it out amongst yourselves.

Very good post. I've actually seen a few games involving Pele and more involving Maradona, so maybe my opinion is tainted. I tend to agree with most of what you just said though.

By the way, I'm not playing Devil's Advocate here, but not having seen Xavi much didn't stop you for voting for Lampard. just a thought.

    Maradona for me.

There was a debate about this on the Real Radio phone in last night, I'm sure Pele won it.

Was there? I never heard it, wish I would have now. I just felt this was long overdue.

Nah, Pele will never get int management. He's too busy with his tongue in FIFA's collective arsehole.
