And he's completely right in saying that relying on a few sources (gigantic corporations) for food is a bad idea. The entire industrialisation of food growing and distribution of food has detached Joe Blogs and the majority of the Western world from the process and turned our nations into a load of incompetents who couldn't survive if these multinationals suddenly went tits up.
GM crops are a result of pretentious "feed the world" horse shit. There's a reason we can't "feed the world". There are too many of us. The earth really is not capable of sustaining such a large number of human beings. Famine, like disease, is a means of thinning the populace. If you're starving and haven't the money to feed your family, stop fucking and giving birth to aids ridden children. And if the last hunter gatherer tribes in Africa can't feed their families, what fucking chance has the Western world got if we're held to ransom by multinationals. You're fucked if you don't own a tin opener.
Well being held to ransom is a thought I haven't thought of but the fact is if it wasn't for GM food a lot of the worlds population will be dead. If there wasn't aids people will still be fucking and making a even bigger population.
Multinationals couldn't hold us to ransom because it would be bad for business they will be just a dependent on our need to buy food just as much as they need our money to keep their business going.
Competition is proberly a good idea with organic food option but then organic food providers will need more protection. I would suspect Charles would slate GM crops because of the fact he has organic farms that are losing out. You can't say it could be partly self motivated.

But they can hold us to ransom because there will always be a demand for food supply. Always. Demand will outshine supply for as long as the sun shines because it is a need, a necessity, and it is a rather scarce resource.
Competition thus isnt a good idea. It should be left, in a perfect, politically un-motivated world, for all the countries with different food 'talents' in terms of raw materials and production processes, to work together to feed the world. Obviously given the political tensions that exist we need to be a bit pragmatic - we cant expect us to just send all the sheep to wales to get fat and then eat them or likewise with cows in britain. But we need to get the predatory multinationals off our food supplies and let sovereign states that have stable, democratic governments take control of their own crops, plantations and whatnot, release them from the fear of being ripped off, cut out all these intermediaries and big predatory corporations and let the farmers sell their crops and food straight to those who demand it at a reasonable price. Give them an incentive to produce a good harvest.
