Yes. It's important.

But if we didn't learn basic disciplines we would soon find our general intelligence in free fall.
What would be the point in learning about 'life skills' if we were a bunch of uneducated idiots.
Maths, English and the Sciences drill into us a discipline that allows us to learn about life using our own wisdom.
No wisdom would just equate us to a load of wasters who probably wouldn't pay attention in 'life skills' classes anyway.
hense y i said keep the standard stuff, ok so i was brief but surely you get the drift. I just see it pointless teaching kids history and geography and all that when i believe like skills are far more important...i left school and yea i may have been able to do algebra and know about the world war 1 and what happens to volcanoes etc, but i had no idea what to do in life... didnt no how to go about getting a jopb i relied on help from my parents didnt no what to do withmoney situations... or living alone, coping with bills life in general! i had no idea! everything i was taught in school has left my mind neways

You don't think people should learn about history? Sheer ignorance.

I'm with the Vamp on this one. History is possibly one of the most, if not the most, of the skills post basic maths, literacy and science. If we don't learn from history then we don't learn from our mistakes and we see the return of feudalism, authoritarian communism, fascism, the tory and whig parties and so on.
Clearly we can only move forward by analyzing our shortcomings in the past. We are limited that we cannot see into the future and have only a finite amount of intellect. Therefore we must use this limited intelligence to further ourselves the best we can, not by learning about home economics or life skills or whatever.

ICT is fast getting up there with Maths, English & Science as one of the important compulsory subjects. Do you think that ICT should be compulsory in schools, or should the little nublets have a choice if they want to study it or not?
It was in my school (Unless you didn't take Welsh) Other things kidsshould learn is about money (Loans, mortages etc) instead of RE.

And regardless of political differences, every single person needs to learn of the sacrifices made by men and women to keep this nation free over the past centuary.
Not particularly what I had in mind.
I don't like us being taught about Britain's supposed greatness and not about our downsides - the setting up of concentration camps, the boer wars and so on.
World History would be much better - im lucky at our school we study, as well as British History, Italian, German and Russian History which gives an insight into the rest of the world as well as the "Britain is historically great" line, which I think is wrong.

Obviously thats important but i think its wrong to teach this from the british perspective in primary school and up to ks3.
I think general world history should be taught - fascism, communism, historiography, a general outline of wars, revolutions and so on, at an early age, and then these more specific topics taught from say, GCSE onwards so that students can make up their own mind about the politics of it all rather than being brainwashed.
Theres no doubting the soldiers' bravery, but thats not the history, the history is the politics of the wars, the causes and consequences.

I agree with both of you.
I think what eBBZ said is important to be taught as a part of the curriculum. Whereas what Vamp is saying is also an important part of history, but teaching it to kids wont help them much and a lot of them wont understand.
The more mature students will benefit more from such things and a lot of people who have any interest in history/military/war learn about this sort of stuff by themselves through books and documentaries.

hmm i agree sort of with what your saying but to me i think that a language is an important aspect of the curriculum i would be far more happier for a language or on the other hand history but i could go on.
LOL maybe ive sort of gone off what i meant to say
look at the stars
look how they shine for you.
Not a bad idea tbh! ICT is involved with most jobs these days and a basic knowledge is needed for when they go on to college/uni i wrecon.
I done ICT for 3 years at college, even though i didnt follow it through and continue with a career in IT it has been beneficial in other jobs, when i worked in a shop the till was a computer and we had another computer for video rentals and when i worked in the hospital we had to admit and discharge patients off the system and then there is some of the equipment (cardiac monitors and stuff). Also when i returned to college 3 years ago to do a completely different course it was good as i didnt need to do the IT Key skills and i spent those lessons doing other work
Im quite good at making presentations on power point so when we have to do a presentation in uni i volunteer to put together the slide show in exchange for the others doing 'most' of the talking.
So yes it has its advantages.

It was compulsory already in my school.
I think it's a good idea, but only if schools can afford to accommodate it.

Yes I think it should be compulsory, especially since now most things require computer skills.
Though, if I were back in school, I'd be fucked cos I didn't know what subjects to chose anyway, so having ICT as a compulsory subject, I dunno what I would have picked
Tell me who wants to know What, when, who where Or how you do your hoes?
