New Car Fault

    I brought a new car on the 12t of September, i paid £3,000 for the car its 9 years old and its done 60,000 miles. 2 weeks after i had it the problems started, a knocking and tapping coming from the engine, i had a friend look at it and first of all thought it was the big end, but now thinks its the top end and hydraulic tappets, i contacted the garage who first of all said there is a 3 month warranty on all of their cars, when i told them about the problem they then then its a part ex vehicle (i didnt part ex) so it doesnt have a warranty and its not their problem. I asked to speak to a manager who called me back and said as a "gesture of good will" he will fix it but when i spoke to him again he said he would split the repair cost. I am not paying anything for it to be fixed, has anyone been in this situation before and what was the outcome?

    Did you get anything in writing concerning the 3 month warranty?

    If not then your fucked

    Its a VW Golf! its  a nice car and doesnt look its age!

    No we didnt get anything about the warranty but we have been onto trading standards and if the car has a fault like mine we are entitled to a full refund for up to 8 weeks.

    Give them the number and address then and ask them too look into and phone the garage and inform them of what your doing,maybe they will change your mind and do the work for free or if they fight it and fail they will lose the car sale and have to do the work anyway.So you will probably find that they will fix the problem for you

    I have told them about me informing trading standards and he said we are not "scared" the guy wont give me his contact number and i have to keep phoning another guy to leave a message for him! They have offered to fix the car if i drive 2 hours to their garage and leave it with them and they will invoice me for half of the repair cost which im not willing to pay.

    not having his number sounds like your dealing with a dodgy guy.

    next time you phone just tell them that seeing as they are not willing to cooperate etc that your leaving everything down to the trading standards and that youl be seeing them in court(if thats were it ends up) never know they could think u really are being serious now and get back to you then

    the law is on your side , first thing you nshould have done , and still do , is send a letter via recorded delivery , keep a copy for yourself aswell , stating the problems and that you either want he car fixing oryour money back , state a time limit to respond , say 7 or 14 days ,  and say after this you will be taking legal action . if he doesnt reply , take him to court

    As that bloke in the paper (that chap on fith gear) would say, if you aint got anything on paper you're fucked. Normally part ex's dont come with any warranty and are normally 'sold as seen'

    Im sending a letter today, hopefully it will all be resolved soon!
