Anyone else have a slight problem with people who apply for council houses?

I am all for them if people have a genuine reason for needing one.

Recently however I have seen people being able to specify what housing they want tho, for example guest bedrooms, getting the council to pathe their gardens/put grass on their lawns etc. My cousin even got the council to buy paint so he could redecorate (and then complained as he would have paint it himself).... another girl at work got pregnant so she could have her own house, and then proceeded again to want room in case her mother stayed.

Meanwhile people who work hard for a living, cant afford mortgages and are barely scraping by, whilst paying for a guest bedroom and paint for someone who doesnt want to work ?

Lol at you, lets hope your life doesnt go tits up and you need some sort of help because you will be too proud to ask for it or take it if offered

What do you class as a genuine reason for needing a council house?

Cant people just have a normal job with a normal lifestyle and ontinue to bide in council rented property or is that too much to ask

    a) not getting pregnant to get a house (a lot of people do it)

    b) being abused by a partner

    c) be grateful for the house you get, not keep on requesting for extras eg paint, flagged garden, more guest bedrooms.

Its people that abuse the system Im on about not people that need help.

    a) a lot of people do it? wouldnt have thought so,the % of people who get pregnant for the reason of getting a house will be very low although im not condoning what they do

    b) point taken

    c) if your going to be spending hard earned money to rent a property from someone then you expect the garden to be in order before you start paying rent on it.If I were renting a property from you then id expect you to have the garden in a presentable condition and i see no difference between a private let and a concil let property.

Also maybe some people dont earn enough to decorate the property fully and the council give out money to help them with a new property which isnt too much of an ask is it

If i put my name down for a house in Doncaster, they'd laugh at me.

Like Hiro said, people do have babies to get a house and 'free money' for the next 18+years.

I know a few people that brag about doing nothing for the money they get.

I heard if you (A girl with a baby) work 20hours per week, you get your earnings, plus they top it up to £1000 per month, after tax.

Thats more than i get! I work 40hours a week.

In my opinion, they encourage people to have kids, I hate these scroungers who're willing to take all the free money they can get.

My mum grew up on a council estate in Hunslit... Apparently back then it was mainly working class, as in the ones who actually worked. We went for a visit a couple of months ago as i was looking at going to Leeds Uni... Oh dear, overrun with chavs, 13 year old mums, drug dens etc.

The sad thing is that living on a council estate used to mean that pretty much everyone worked, it's been completely destroyed now. My great aunt still lives there & has had her door kicked in twice and windows broken recently by scum.

Pick a star on the horizon

    And follow the light

You'll come back when it's over

    No need to say goodbye.

Rest in Peace Victoria & Will, always loved and missed, never forgotten xxx

Margaret Thatcher would have never allowed this to happen. Sad times.

I lived in a council house for the first 7 years of being in England. It was a fucking shithole full of scum, criminals, druggies and little sluts getting spitroasted in the alleys at all hours of the night. Although I never had any problems with anyone there personaly, it was still a shite place to live in.

I would never volunterily live there again.

I know this is an old post and your account has been removed but I still can't resist.

Thatcher is exactly why this happened. Her selling of council houses are what has created a shortage of them.

the reason the council will have sorted the garden and decoration etc, is because if you live in a council house (as i do) and do the work yourself they dont see the good natured side of it, we ripped all our garden out and built a patio area and re-turfed all the shitty grass etc, which cost around £4 - £5 grand, we've had a new bathroom suite fitted and a kitchen fitted and windows all at our cost, the house has been plastered head to toe by myself (but would have cost a fortune) and the council were'nt best pleased but we didnt want to wait while 2010 which is when they were planning on bringing the house into this century

    yea drives me nuts

my friend told me about a guy who sold everything he had to fight for his country, he was gonna be there till the end, unfortunatly he got injured and had to leave... the army gave him some money to help him out, so with it he bought a landrover ripped out the back seats and basicly lived in it... but what i think made a proper statement was that he parked his landrover on the drive of this huge council house where a bunch of (i cant remember whome maybe polish?) family lived... when they asked him to get off he refused and told them that he fought (sp) for his country, was born in this country, paid taxs to this country... and that, that house was more his then theirs... dunno what happend to him but i think they left him be lol

kinda makes a point tho how someone can give up everything they have to support their country and end up with nothing and how others can walk into the country and be given everything
