ICT is fast getting up there with Maths, English & Science as one of the important compulsory subjects. Do you think that ICT should be compulsory in schools, or should the little nublets have a choice if they want to study it or not?

Yes. But education boards that are already underfunded should be looking towards open source alternatives to Microsoft so they don't have to spend most of their annual budget on simple licensing fees.

I think they should keep it at English, Maths and Science.

At my school we had to do IT as part of our timetable compulsary till 3rd year.

I don't know if the school system in england is the same where you are made to do foundation levels in most subjects, then when you get to a certain age (13 in scotland) you have the choice in which subjects to take. OR if it is the same you mean that you should STILL have to do it when you turn 13.

I don't think it should be made compulsary.

lol not quite, but I get your point. Although knocking up a simple document is a skill needed in society. If you can't knock up a simple CV, then what chance do they have of getting themselves a job. Basic ICT key skills in schools is usally more software related rather than hardware.

There's nothing that someone with an ECDL knows about computers that you cant discover yourself by spending a little time on the computer.

If it was slightly more advanced though....

Aye thats what i mean when I did it at school it was basically doing some sort of word project and slapping abit of spreadsheet from excel in there nothing that IT based. But then again that sort of stuff anyone with a ounce of general knowledge should get their head round fairly quickly.

If they push it to hard though it might result in something else being taken of the timetable etc as not sure what its like now but when i did it, it was an optional class you could do.

    I think I did a GNVQ in IT but if I remember correctly I got a U.

I was meant to retake it all in 6th form but I never turned up to any of the lessons because it was so crap!

I dont think its nessacary! I know how to work a computer quite well and that course was just shit! so no it shouldnt be compulsory! its something thats too hard to learn when your in a class of 30 with one teacher.

But if we didn't learn basic disciplines we would soon find our general intelligence in free fall.

What would be the point in learning about 'life skills' if we were a bunch of uneducated idiots.

Maths, English and the Sciences drill into us a discipline that allows us to learn about life using our own wisdom.

No wisdom would just equate us to a load of wasters who probably wouldn't pay attention in 'life skills' classes anyway.
