What do you think are the main causes of obesity and what can be done?

I know people say that the government can only offer advice, but a new WHO report has shown that in parts of Glasgow the life expectancy is just 54. For a developed part of the world that is disgraceful.

People in St.Pancras have a life expectancy of 11 years less than people in Kensington, just a short tube journey away.

Is it not time that people realised that inequality, on an economic and social level, contribute to a poorer standard of life, obesity, poorer health etc?

It is NOT the soceity's fault or the gov'ts fault.

It is 98% of the time the individuals fault and to suggest otherwise is ridiculous. The other 2% is probably genuinly some sort of a glandular problem

It is part of this disgraceful blame culture to blame someone or something else for obesity. Nobody puts a gun to your head and force feeds you chocolate eclairs.

It does NOT cost more to eat healthily than to eat fatty foods. Jogging is free and so is doing some press ups and sit ups.

The differences in life expectancies are because of several reasons, not just obesity

Then why haven't people improved their health with the help of government suggestions and being left up to their own devices?

We clearly arent a lazy species as we have worked ridiculously hard, look at everything we have created over the past 100-200 years, that doesn't associate itself with laziness.

And if we look we see that certain areas contain lots of people who are active, eat healthily and live long and fruitful lives, im pertaining to health only here. In other areas, often those with high poverty, little facility for education, employment and adequate healthcare, you see low life expectancy, higher trends of obesity and ill health.

Now Jargi, by this trend, you would be suggesting that people from certain poorer areas are inferior to those in more affluent areas. I'm sure you can now see the error of your ways?

Obesity comes from over eating not under eating.

If you were so poor, you wouldnt have the money to over eat.

The richest country in the world, USA, is also the most obese one.

In other european countires, where standards of living are more or less the same as Britains, they do not have the same problem as Briatin.

It's all about  culture and food culture at that, not about income.

Remember primary schools banning fast food and mothers passing burgers to their children through the fence?

Look at Germany, where healthy eating is a big part of their food culture, it reflects in the fact that most of them only eat brown bread.

Look at Italy, Spain, Greece, France and compare their food culture to Britains.

Go into McDonalds in Britain and you will see mothers feeding fries to their babies in high chairs, go to mainland Europe and I'll gurantee you, you will not see anything alike.

I blame the credit crunch - people are just getting fat so they can save on their central heating bills.

Fatties should be made ashamed by their fatness and prompted into taking action about it. I used to be a porker until I decided that my confidence would improve greatly if I had a better self-image, and being fit and healthy would be infinitely better than being podgy and sweaty after running upstairs just the once.

In most cases the parents are to be blamed for there childs obesity....Lazy parents who give there kids read meals and buy them sweets from the shop to shut em up make me sick! With adults i think its due to time..Yes there is some who are just fat lazy slobs but some are fat because they work long hours when they get home they probably cba to cook a proper meal and eat a takeaway or a ready meal...Not many people exercise though

i think obesity is the fault of the person but also bullying makes it worse as u dont help the person.

To help them i think and not just for the kids but for everyone i think pools should have twilight hours more where larger people can go swimming with dimmed lights i know some swimming pools already offer this. But also make it free of charge to go during this time for only larger people to encourage them to go.

i dont agree with that.in some cases bullying wont be helpful but in alot i think this gives the person a harsh but true reality check and shocks them into changing...As most of the time the people who get bullied are the kinda people who lack confidence due to there weakness e,g weight

it was funny hearing him say it. But its also true. Everyone assumes people who r fat r lazy and not just shy and the one thing u dont want if ure shy is some person who has had a 6 pack since he was 3 laughing at u for what u look like.
