Anybody on here train in athletics? If so what events do you do and what sort of training do you do to build up your stamia and speed.

Ive not long started and im quite slow at the mo lol. 9 years ago i could sprint the 110m in 13 secs flat which works out just under 12 secs for 100m.

Here are my best times all in trainers have not got spikes yet. (will be edit when i get quicker times.)

    40M   5.83 SECS-  ?/7/08

    60M   8.9 SECS-   5/9/08

    100M 13.5 SECS- ?/9/08

    150M 20.1 SECS- 9/9/08

    200M  29 SECS - ?/9/08

    250M  ????

    300M   ???

    350M  55 SECS - 16/10/08

    400M  1MIN 13SECS - 7/10/08

    800M 3MIN 21SECS  - 5/10/08

    1500M ???

    1600M ???

    2000M ??

    2400m??

    110M 13secs (11.9 for 100m) - summer/99

    2400M 10mins 25secs - summer/99

Strength - Weights (lift heavy little reps)

Speed - Sprinting over 60 metres.

Don't worry aout the number of reps. People need to fucking leave that point alone. Lift your maximum weight for the most reps you can. Keep aiming to increase the weight over time. This will help you improve your explosive strength, which should improve your sprints. Work on your footwork and rhythm too. Sprinting is as much about technique as it is physical strength and ability. If you can't get the drive/cruise change right, you're losing time and expending energy for nothing.

I used to do a lot of athletics wen i was younger and done almost every event. But got to that stage where i kept getting injured so now im coaching.
got a level 2 in jumping events but will as soon as i have time build that up ove rthe rest of teh events and maybe try go for a level 3

My best advice if your wanting to work on speed is for you to do short in an up/down type session i.e 20 40 60 80 60 40 80. that will help with your acceleration which might be the problem if you havent been training for a while.

but it could also be that you arent able to keep up your speed over the whole 100m and so needing to work on the sprinting endurance and so by running 150s that could help a lot as well.

In year 10 i could do the 1500m in 6 minutes ish

100m in 15.2 secs (not great at sprinting, better at longer distances)

I loved cross country always ran in the district competitions from year 7-11

2nd best in my year group out of the girls at long distance running, long jump, high jump and shot putt (suprisingly enough, i have pretty strong arms) pfft never the best, always second although i was the only girl who could climb the ropes to the top, and do more than 5 pull ups/chin ups. Most struggle with 1, i can do over 10

only ever did ong jump at school competitivly, cant remember my PB, but only did one competition where i came last lol

as for cross country, in PE lessons our track was only about 2 or 2.5 miles, think my PB for that was around 13-14 mins, not sure...

I would love to know the time from the day we had snow on the ground and hail flying in our face on the home stretch running into gale force winds....that was TOUGH!

-now they cancel those cross country lessons if its raining, poofs.

I went training yesterday and did 4 and 800m and got some shockingly bad times lol. It took me over a min in the 400m and well over 3 mins in 800m baring in mind the world record for 1600m is 3.26secs and took me 3.21secs just to do the 800m lol.

Im now running a bit quick i should be able to run 400M in just under 1min now as there is a big difference in time between my 350s and my 400s two weeks ago .

I think swimming is a good way of building up strength but without the stress caused by running. Don't get me wrong it won't emulate a run but will keep you from becoming too stiff and possibly passing on another run or training session if you happen to be feeling the strain from a heavy amount of training. I do the 1500 metres and mile on the track, I want to get my target of 4:30 for the mile hopefully within the next 6 months. Injuries providing and persistance, i.e not saying its too damn cold
